Taj Mahal
Agra, India
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Even though it looks like a palace, it was actually built as a tomb for the emperor’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who he loved very much. She died giving birth to their 14th child. The Taj Mahal is considered one of the best examples of Mughal architecture, which combines Persian, Turkish, and Indian styles.
Construction started in 1632 and was finished in 1643, with the surrounding buildings and gardens taking about five more years to complete. It’s made of shiny white marble, and when the sun rises or sets, the building looks like it’s changing colours. One of the coolest things about the Taj Mahal is its perfect symmetry. Also, the tall towers, called minarets, look like they stand straight up, but they actually lean outwards a little bit. This way, if something bad happens, they won’t fall on the main tomb.
